Testing the Seeds and Compost Planter

A lot of lands are not great for farming but there are plenty of ways to naturally (and cheaply) fertilize soil and start Gardens and Food Forests.

Testing the Seeds and Compost Planter

It's seems we have the optimal solution: a heavy duty manual tool made with very strong metal, ultra-simple design. The tool has a fair amount of heft to it, which reduces the amount of physical force needed to slice into the soil. The planting speed is relatively fast. It is easy to use. The tube and the digging head are really tough. The funnel is soldered below the equilibrium point to leave a handle for a hand that will more easily support the tool while the other hand drive's it. To date it look like the perfect Food Forests planting tool. Planting big Food Forests is a good way to sequester CO2.

We will have 4 new industrial class prototypes manufactured for April 15 2012 at 200$ each

If you know someone interested in buying small or large quantities it could bring the price down for the May 2012 production.

Production design change to test computer generated funnel

Unread postby ogfor » April 2nd, 2012, 11:03 am

After a discussion with the industrial designer I phoned the machinist and we agreed to test the new drawings of the funnel. The new very slick funnel design is optimized for minimum metal use and is a little smaller than the heavy glued cloth that was used for kota's tests.

Lentils as Green Manure planting trials

Unread postby ogfor » April 3rd, 2012, 2:40 pm

I took less than 15 minutes to plant 10 inches spaced spots with 5-10 lentil seeds in each spot in a 7 by 10 foot area of hard and still wet freshly thawed soil. It took about a couple of cups of lentils seeds for that test.

This spear or javelin type of tool is surprisingly easy and fast to use if you do not try to plant too deeply. The long sturdy handle tube make it's possible to plant in hard to reach and totally no-till environments.

It help to have your seeds handy in an apron with one or two large pouches.

The test ground (shady side of the street, very poor soil, no fertilizer or tilling)

Seeds spots of Lentil seeds for green manure where also planted in the backyard where the conditions are more difficult and varied. The planter did very well through the abundant leafs covering the soil.
